If you’ve ever seen a Maine Coon in person… an actual full-grown Maine Coon standing next to a regular cat… your first reaction is probably going to be something like wait, is that a cat or a small dog?
They are enormous.
Not in a fat way.
Tall.
Long.
Large-framed
All the synonyms to oversized can be included here.
But, despite their size, Maine Coons are one of the gentlest and most sociable cat breeds in existence.
Playful without being hyper.
Affectionate without being clingy.
Curious about everything.
And they make this soft chirping sound instead of a typical meow that, once you hear it, becomes one of the more endearing things any cat has ever done.
I learned about Maine Coons through Fallout Shelter, an old game I was playing with back in the day. And because I was making a guide about animal compnions for my guild, I had to do some research about Maine Coons, and Short-Haireds, and Bombays, and all other cat breeds included in the game.
Of all those cat breeds, the Maine Coon is the one I want most mainly because of their size and dog-like temperament.

The Davao Heat Problem — and How to Solve It
The maine… er… main challenge of keeping a Maine Coon in the Philippines is the heat.
This breed was developed in the northeastern United States, one of the coldest regions of North America, where their thick semi-longhair double coat protected them through brutal winters.
Davao runs 27 to 32 degrees Celsius year-round with 78 to 83 percent humidity.
That coat is not well-suited in our climate.
The solution has three parts.
- Air conditioning. Not just in one room, but in the rooms where the cat spends most of its time. A Maine Coon without access to a cool space in Davao heat is a Maine Coon heading toward heat stress. They will seek out the coldest spot in the house, which in a non-aircon home is nowhere near cool enough. An ambient temperature of 22 to 25 degrees in their primary living area is the target.
- Grooming. The Maine Coon’s coat is designed to shed moisture and resist matting, which means it’s more manageable than a Persian’s but still requires regular attention. In Davao’s humidity, the coat can trap moisture and develop matts faster than in a dry climate. Brush two to three times per week minimum. Daily during heavy shedding seasons. Keep the coat clean and free of tangles and the heat issue becomes significantly more manageable.
- Hydration. Maine Coons are historically associated with water… they are famously fascinated by it, often dipping paws into water dishes or drinking from running taps. A cat water fountain encourages consistent drinking, which is important for kidney health and temperature regulation in our heat. Always fresh, always available.
Feeding
Maine Coons are large with large nutritional needs.
High-protein, high-quality wet and dry food is the standard.
Look for cat food that’s either chicken, fish or beef as the first or maine… (ok ok last na) main ingredient, not fillers like corn or wheat.
In Davao, Royal Canin Maine Coon-specific formula is available at SM and specialty pet shops and is formulated for their joint health and coat condition specifically.
Feed twice daily in measured portions.
Maine Coons are food-motivated and will absolutely overeat if given free access to a full bowl. Obesity in a large-framed cat causes joint problems that compound as they age. A healthy Maine Coon should have a visible waist when viewed from above and you should be able to feel their ribs without pressing hard.
Fresh water at all times. Wet food at least once daily. Supplement with hairball control treats during heavy shedding periods to prevent compacted hairballs, which are more of a risk with long-coated breeds.
Exercise & Enrichment
Maine Coons are active, playful, and dog-like in their enthusiasm for interaction.
They fetch.
They’ll follow you around.
They’ll want to know what you’re doing and be nearby while you do it.
This is not a cat that will be satisfied sitting on a shelf watching the world go by.
They’ll also need some vertical space.
A tall cat tree with multiple platforms and scratching posts is essential, not optional.
In a typical Davao subdivision home or apartment, floor space is limited but vertical space is available. Invest in a cat tree that reaches close to ceiling height.
Maine Coons will use every level.
Interactive play sessions of at least 15 to 20 minutes daily keep them mentally stimulated and physically exercised.
Wand toys, feather teasers, and puzzle feeders are all effective.
A bored Maine Coon becomes a destructive Maine Coon — they are intelligent enough to find their own entertainment, which is rarely the entertainment you would have chosen for them. Just like a dog…

Vet access in Davao for Maine Coons is generally good — most cat-experienced vets can handle routine care. For cardiac screening, look for a vet with echocardiogram capability; these are available at larger veterinary clinics in Davao City. Identify your vet before purchasing, not after.
Is a Maine Coon Right for You in Davao?
If you have aircon, space for a cat tree, time for daily interaction and regular grooming, and a willingness to pay the higher feed and vet costs that come with a large purebred cat… yes.
A Maine Coon in the right Davao home is a genuinely magnificent companion. They live long, love hard, and fill a room with a presence that’s very much like a dog.
If you do not have reliable aircon access or live in a small space with no vertical options, consider a short-haired breed better suited to our climate first. The Maine Coon deserves the environment it thrives in, not just the home that’s available.
