PET SUITABILITY RATING FOR DAVAO CITY: 4 out of 5
OVERALL RECOMMENDATION: GOOD (with considerations)
Finally… a pet that actually makes sense for Davao!
Dachshunds are excellent companion dogs that adapt well to our tropical climate. They’re small enough for apartment living but with a big enough personality to feel like a “real” dog. The short-haired variety handles our heat better than long-haired.
Here’s the thing tho… dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers (dachs = badger, hund = dog in German).
This means they’re brave to the point of stuborness, they dig constantly, and they have surprising prey drive.
Your garden?
They’ll excavate it looking for imaginary badgers.
That’s just how they’re wired.
Good though if you want to get rid of rats.
We once had a dachshund that consistently brought rats and mice to us on a daily basis.
Back problems are the main health concern.
Their long spine and short legs make them prone to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). Never let them jump off furniture, use stairs excessively, or become overweight.
In Davao, keep them indoors during the hottest hours (11am-3pm) since they overheat easily… those short legs put them close to hot pavement.
They’re loud.
Dachshunds bark.
A LOT.
If you live in a subdivision with close neighbors, this can be an issue.
Early training helps but you’ll never have a completely quiet dachshund.
LEGAL STATUS: Legal in Philippines. No special permits needed. Just regular dog licensing from your LGU.
CARE TAGS: Back Problems Risk • Stubborn • Barks A Lot • Needs Training • Heat Sensitive
ALTERNATIVES: If back problems worry you, consider Beagle or French Bulldog.
