The British Shorthair is one of the oldest and most recognized cat breeds in the world.
You have seen this cat before even if you didn’t know the name… it is the cat behind the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland, the inspiration for countless round-faced cat illustrations, and the breed most commonly used in cat food advertisements because their dense, plush coat photographs beautifully under any lighting.

In the Philippines, British Shorthairs are growing in popularity and for good reason.
They are significantly better suited to our climate than long-haired breeds, genuinely easy to live with in a Philippine home or apartment, and their temperament is one of the most stable of any cat breed.
This care guide is for the Filipino owner who either already has one or is seriously considering it.

Temperament: What Living With a British Shorthair Actually Feels Like
The British Shorthair is famously described as dog-like in its loyalty but cat-like in its independence. This is a reasonably accurate description…
They will follow you from room to room.
They’ll demand your attention quietly.
And they will want to be near you without necessarily being on you.

Most British Shorthairs are not great lap cats, at least not for extended sessions.
They prefer to sit beside you rather than on you, to be in the same room rather than draped across your shoulders.
If you want a cat that will drape itself on you constantly, a Ragdoll or Persian might suit you better. If you want a cat that is genuinely companionable but respects your space and expects you to respect theirs, the British Shorthair is the one for you.
They are particularly good with children and with other pets.
A British Shorthair is calm and does not panic easily.
Loud noises, new people, other animals — they tend to process all of it with the same measured composure.
This makes them one of the better breeds for active Filipino households where there is always something happening.
They mature slowly.
A British Shorthair is not fully physically or emotionally mature until around three to five years of age, later than most cats.
Kittens and juveniles are more playful and active than the adults, which sometimes surprises new owners who bought a British Shorthair expecting the famously calm adult temperament and ended up with a bouncy teenager for the first couple of years.
This is normal.
They settle.
Eventually.
They Can Handle the Davao Climate Better Than the Maine Coon
If you read the Maine Coon care guide, you know the heat is the central challenge for long-haired breeds in Davao.
The British Shorthair is a better choice for our weather.
The short, dense plush coat does not trap moisture the way a long coat does. It does not develop the same kind of heat-related matting or skin issues. And because the coat is genuinely short, it does not insulate as aggressively against our tropical heat.
That said, they are still a cat developed for cooler British weather, and a British Shorthair sitting in full 32-degree afternoon Davao sun with no shade or aircon is still uncomfortable.
What you need:
- Shade and ventilation: If no aircon is available, cross-ventilated shaded rooms with tiled floors are manageable for British Shorthairs in Davao. They will seek out cool tile surfaces to lie on during the hottest parts of the day.
- Aircon access: Ideally, the cat’s primary resting area stays at 24 to 27 degrees during peak heat hours. This is less critical than with a Maine Coon but still strongly recommended.
- Fresh water always: British Shorthairs are prone to kidney disease as they age, and adequate hydration is the single most important preventive measure. A cat water fountain is worth the investment. Change water daily regardless.
- Avoid outdoor midday heat: If your British Shorthair has outdoor access, ensure it’s shaded and most active outdoor time happens in the cooler morning and evening hours.
Feeding
British Shorthairs have a strong tendency toward obesity. This is the number one health management issue for the breed and it is directly connected to their build — that stocky, dense, cobby frame looks adorably round even when the cat is already overweight, which makes it easy to miss that your cat is actually getting too heavy.
Feed measured portions twice daily.
Do not free-feed (leaving a full bowl available at all times).
A healthy adult British Shorthair needs approximately 55 to 70 calories per kilogram of ideal body weight per day — your vet can calculate the specific amount for your cat’s target weight. Use a kitchen scale for portions if you’re serious about weight management.
High-quality wet food once or twice daily, supplemented with dry food, is the best approach for long-term kidney health. The extra moisture from wet food is genuinely protective in our hot climate. Look for cat food where a named protein (chicken, fish, beef) is the first listed ingredient. Avoid foods with high carbohydrate fillers as the primary ingredient.
Treats should be counted as part of their daily calorie allowance, not added on top.
A British Shorthair that figures out that chirping at you results in treats has already won and you haven’t noticed yet.
Grooming

The British Shorthair‘s short plush coat is remarkably self-maintaining.
It does not mat.
It does not tangle.
It does requires brushing once or twice a week under normal circumstances, and slightly more during the twice-yearly heavy shedding periods when the undercoat blows out.
Use a rubber grooming glove or a soft slicker brush.
The British Shorthair’s coat responds best to gentle strokes rather than deep raking, which can irritate the dense undercoat.
Most British Shorthairs actually enjoy being brushed once they’re used to it — the texture of the coat makes the sensation pleasant for them.
Other grooming basics that apply in Davao’s climate:
- Ear cleaning: Check weekly and clean gently with a cotton ball and cat-safe ear cleaner. Davao’s humidity can increase wax buildup.
- Nail trimming: Every 2 to 3 weeks for indoor cats. Provide at least one good scratching post to allow natural nail maintenance between trims.
- Dental care: Start early with tooth brushing or dental treats. British Shorthairs are prone to dental disease as they age. A vet dental check annually is worthwhile.
- Eye cleaning: The round face means some tear staining can occur. Wipe gently with a damp cloth as needed.
- Bathing: Rarely necessary unless the cat gets into something. The coat repels most surface dirt. If bathing is needed, use a cat-specific shampoo and dry thoroughly in a warm room.
Exercise and Enrichment

British Shorthairs are moderately active cats, more so as kittens and juveniles and increasingly calm as they age into adults. They are not high-energy breeds that need constant stimulation, but they are also not furniture. An adult British Shorthair that gets no play or enrichment becomes sedentary, and sedentary leads directly back to the obesity problem.
Two interactive play sessions of 10 to 15 minutes daily is the minimum for an adult cat. More for juveniles. Wand toys, feather teasers, and laser pointers work well. The British Shorthair is not as intensely fetch-oriented as a Maine Coon but many do learn to retrieve small toys.
Vertical space matters even for this stockier breed.
A cat tree with multiple platforms gives them climbing and perching options, which is important for mental stimulation and for giving them territory they feel is theirs.
In a Philippine apartment or smaller home, a well-placed cat tree near a window gives the cat entertainment from bird and street activity outside, which counts as enrichment.
Puzzle feeders, where the cat works for a portion of their food, are excellent for British Shorthairs specifically because they address both mental stimulation and the tendency to eat too fast. In Davao, these are available from specialty pet shops or can be ordered online.
Health & Vet Care
| Condition | What to Know |
| Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) | Genetic heart condition affecting British Shorthairs; cardiac screening from age 2 recommended annually; buy from breeders who health-test |
| Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) | Genetic kidney cyst formation; DNA testing available; reputable breeders screen for PKD-negative status — always ask |
| Obesity | Primary lifestyle health risk; stocky build masks weight gain visually; weigh monthly and adjust food accordingly |
| Dental disease | Common in the breed; annual dental checks and home dental care from early age significantly reduce risk |
| Kidney disease (chronic) | Common in older cats generally; wet food diet and adequate hydration are the best preventive measures |
| Joint issues | Heavier-set cats can develop arthritis earlier; maintain healthy weight and provide accessible resting spots that don’t require jumping |
Vet access in Davao for British Shorthairs is good at most cat-experienced clinics.
For cardiac screening and PKD testing, ask specifically about these when selecting a vet — not all clinics have echocardiogram capability.
Identify your vet and book an initial wellness visit within the first week of bringing your cat home, regardless of whether anything seems wrong.
Establishing a baseline record early is always worthwhile.
Final Verdict
The British Shorthair is one of the most practical purebred cat choices for a Filipino household.
- The coat manages well in our climate without constant intervention.
- The temperament suits both busy and quieter homes.
- Their independence means they don’t fall apart if you work long hours.
- And that round, serious face and plush coat makes them one of the more visually stunning cats you can share a space with.
The two things to go in with clear eyes about: the weight management requirement is real and lifelong, and the genetic health screening for HCM and PKD means buying from a reputable breeder who tests matters more for this breed than for many others.
Cut those corners and you may end up with significant vet costs down the line.
Do it right from the start and you have a calm, healthy, dignified companion for fifteen years or more.
That is a very good deal.
| ANIMAL TRIVIA: The British Shorthair is widely believed to be the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Cheshire Cat in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865). Carroll grew up in Cheshire, England, and the breed’s distinctively round face, wide-set eyes, and tendency to sit completely still while regarding people with calm detachment perfectly matches the Cheshire Cat’s description. The British Shorthair’s smile, created by the natural curvature of its muzzle and full cheeks, is uniquely persistent — it looks like it’s smiling even when it’s just sitting there doing absolutley nothing. |
